New Faculty Join School2 min read

New Faculty Updates are published in January and July each year to introduce full-time faculty who have joined the School of Dentistry.

Ann Arbor, Mich., January 23, 2020 – The two new full-time faculty members who joined the School of Dentistry since Aug. 1, 2019, specialize in pediatric dentistry and periodontology.

Here are brief biographies of their backgrounds and professional interests:

Dr. Rodney Vergotine

• Rodney Vergotine joined the Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry as a clinical associate professor on Oct. 1, 2019. Dr. Vergotine received his dental degree (B.Ch.D.) and his Master of Science in Community Dentistry (MSc-Dent) from the University of the Western Cape in Tygerberg, South Africa. He received his Specialty Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from Children’s Mercy Hospital, University of Missouri-Kansas City. Dr. Vergotine held positions at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Marquette University where he also was an attending pediatric dentist for Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Prior to joining U-M, he was a clinical associate professor at Midwestern University, College of Dental Medicine-Illinois. He is a Fellow of both the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and the International Association of Dental Traumatology. He has significant experience in clinical and didactic instruction at the pre-doctoral and graduate student levels.

Dr. Erin Shan-Huey Yu

• Erin Shan-Huey Yu was named Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine, effective Jan. 1, 2020.  Dr. Yu earned her DDS from the School of Dentistry, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan. She holds a Master of Science degree in Periodontics and Oral Medicine from the U-M School of Dentistry. She is the recipient of two fellowships from the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation: the Richard J. Lazzara Fellowship in Advanced Implant Surgery in 2018 and the Nevins BioHorizons Fellowship 2019.  She has contributed to more than 10 peer-reviewed publications.
