Jacques Nör elected vice-president of AADR3 min read

Position leads to presidency of national organization in two years

Ann Arbor, Mich., Jan. 30, 2019 -–Dr. Jacques Nör, a professor and department chair at the School of Dentistry, has been elected vice-president of the American Association for Dental Research, which puts him in line to lead the national organization in two years.

Nör is the Donald A. Kerr Collegiate Professor of Dentistry and chair of the Department of Cariology, Restorative Sciences and Endodontics. He is also a professor of Otolaryngology at the U-M School of Medicine and a professor of Biomedical Engineering at the U-M College of Engineering.

Elected by AADR’s membership, Nör begins his term as vice-president in June at the conclusion of the 48th annual meeting of the AADR in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The meeting is held in conjunction with the 97th General Session of the International Association for Dental Research and the 43rd annual meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research.

After serving as vice-president for a year beginning in June, Nör will remain on the AADR Board of Directors for three consecutive terms as president-elect, president and immediate past president.

Nör received his DDS from the Brazilian Federal University, Porto Alegre, Brazil. He received his master’s degree in pediatric dentistry and a Ph.D in oral health Sciences, and completed his Postdoctoral Fellow in cancer biology, all at the University of Michigan. His postdoctoral training focused on the understanding of mechanisms regulating endothelial cell apoptosis. He has expanded his research program to study endothelial cell fate in head and neck cancer. His research has been continuously funded by 34 National Institutes of Health and corporate grants/contracts since 2002.

Nör has been an Associate Editor of Journal of Dental Research and has served on numerous IADR and AADR committees. He was selected as an AADR Fellow in 2017 and was winner of the 2012 Distinguished Scientist Award. He received the 2010 and 2011 William J. Gies Award, Biological, and won first place in the both the IADR and AADR Edward H. Hatton Award, Postdoctoral Category, in 1999.

AADR, headquartered in Alexandria, Va., is a non-profit organization with more than 3,330 members in the United States. Its mission is to advance research and increase knowledge for the improvement of oral health; to support and represent the oral health research community; and to facilitate the communication and application of research findings.

Nör’s election to the AADR board is in addition to two recent leadership positions with other national organizations. In July 2019, he completes a two-year term as chair of the Oral, Dental, and Craniofacial Sciences study section of the National Institutes of Health. This is the primary study section for NIH research grants in the field of dentistry. He has been a standing member of this study section since 2015 and chair since 2017. He is also chair-elect of the Section on Dentistry and Oral Health Sciences of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences (AAAS). His term as chair starts after the annual meeting of the AAAS in February. He was Councilman of this section from 2009-2014 and was elected a Fellow of the AAAS in 2013.
