2018 Shanghai Ranking is second high rating this year
Ann Arbor, Mich., July 17, 2018 -– The University of Michigan School of Dentistry retained its distinction as the top dental school in the world in the 2018 rankings published by an international organization that rates universities and their programs.
Shanghai Ranking lists the U-M dental school as No. 1 in Dentistry and Oral Sciences in its Global Ranking of Academic Subjects released today. The ranking measures research productivity, research quality, extent of international collaboration, amount of research published in top journals, and the number of significant academic awards faculty receive from professional organizations.
The survey ranks 54 subjects within five categories: Medical Sciences including dentistry, Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences and Social Sciences. Data from more than 4,000 universities was examined, with the final report including 1,400 universities from 80 countries.
“We’re obviously pleased to be rated as the top dental school in the world,” said Dean Laurie McCauley. “The school’s dedication to excellence and leadership in dentistry, dental education and research is a tradition that dates to the early days after our founding in 1875. The extraordinary commitment of our faculty, students and researchers is on display in the clinics, labs and classrooms of our school every day. It’s gratifying to see that acknowledged by these independent rankings.”
Shanghai Ranking is the second major international survey this year that has rated the School of Dentistry highly. In March, for the fourth consecutive year, the QS World University Rankings rated the U-M dental school No. 1 in the United States, and QS listed the school as No. 3 in the world. The academic subject ranking released today by Shanghai Ranking is part of a larger university rating system, known as the Academic Ranking of World Universities, or ARWU. The overall university rating, not yet released for 2018, was first published in June 2003 by the Center for World-Class Universities at the Graduate School of Education of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China as a way to compare Chinese universities with others around the world. The breakdown by academic subject was added in 2009.
Since 2009, ARWU has been published by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, which conducts higher education research independent of any universities or government agencies. The complete Shanghai subject rankings and a more detailed description of methodology can be found on the organization’s website.
