Melissa Karby Receives University Research Award2 min read

Ann Arbor, Mich., May 2, 2019 -– Melissa Karby, Director of Research Administration at the School of Dentistry, has received a University of Michigan award for outstanding service to the research community.

Karby received the Research Administrator Recognition Award, one of four campus-wide awards announced by S. Jack Hu, U-M’s Vice President for Research. The award recognizes research administrators in any unit across campus, and honors exemplary service to the research community over a number of years.

Karby has 17 years of experience in research administration, previously holding roles in Shared Services and the Medical School at U-M before coming to the dental school as the Contracts and Grants Manager in November 2016. She was named Director of Research Administration in early 2018. In that role she reviews and assists with grant proposals, works with leadership to identify research initiatives, and explores ways to improve and enhance services. The award nomination cited her skills, breadth of knowledge and commitment to volunteer work in helping  support and advance the university’s research mission.

“Melissa is an incredible advocate for the research enterprise here at the School of Dentistry,” said Dr. Russell Taichman, Associate Dean for Research. “She stays closely connected to the campus and national research networks in ways that enable and assist our faculty so that they can focus on their labs and projects. Whether that relates to grant-writing or expanding research funds or many other aspects, she is always improving, always looking to take us to the next level.”

An award reception, which is open to the public, will be held May 23 from 3:30 p.m.-5 p.m. in the Michigan League’s Vandenberg Room, with the presentations set for 4 p.m. For more information on the awards, see a related story on the University Record website.
