2018 QS World Rankings place school first in U.S. and No. 3 in the world

Ann Arbor, Mich., March 2, 2018 — For the fourth consecutive year, the University of Michigan School of Dentistry is rated as the top dental school in the United States by an international publication that rates universities.

The 2018 QS World University Rankings also lists U-M as the third best dental school in the world, behind Hong Kong University and King’s College London.

QS analyzed information about 4,500 institutions in 75 countries. The annual report examines 48 specialties to help prospective students identify the world’s leading schools in the students’ area of interest. Among the criteria considered: an international survey of academics who rate the reputation of universities; the opinion of universities in terms of which institution’s graduates they are most likely to employ; research citations by paper; and a method called the “h-index” that measures the productivity and impact of the published work of a scientist or scholar, or a group, such as a department or a university.

“Rankings like the annual QS report help us confirm our tradition of excellence at the School of Dentistry,” said Dean Laurie McCauley. “From the school’s early days, the founders and first professors aspired to lead the profession of dentistry. That’s a part of the historical fabric of the school – always trying to improve upon the many aspects of clinical dentistry and the related research.”

After U-M’s No. 3 spot internationally, the next highest-ranked U.S. dental schools are Harvard at No. 12, University of North Carolina at 13, University of Washington at 14 and New York University at 15.

The rankings are a publication of the British Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Company.  More information and the list of the top dental schools in the world can be found on the QS website.
