Polverini Receives Birnberg Research Award1 min read

Ann Arbor, MI — May 1, 2013 — Dr. Peter Polverini, dean of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, recently received a prestigious award for his research from the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine.

Polverini received the Birnberg Research Award for his research on angiogenesis, the growth of blood vessels, and its relationship to cancer and other diseases.  The award was presented last month at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine.

Presented annually since 1954, the Birnberg Research Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to dentistry with their research as well as honoring those who mentor dental scientists. 

Polverini is currently the president of the American Association for Dental Research.  He received the Distinguished Scientist Award in Oral Medicine and Pathology from the International Association for Dental Research, is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 2010.
