Dental school faculty featured in video celebrating 100th anniversary of Journal of Dental Research3 min read
Ann Arbor, Mich., June 20, 2019 -– A new video that celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Journal of Dental Researchfeatures several interviews with University of Michigan School of Dentistry faculty and numerous scenes captured in research labs at the school.
The video is part of a year-long commemoration of the journal’s history. A series of articles, videos and podcasts celebrate its importance and impact on dental, oral and craniofacial research over the last century. Since its founding in 1919 by William J. Gies, the multidisciplinary JDR has become the top-ranked journal for oral health sciences by disseminating the latest research and driving new concepts into clinical practice.
The latest video was released this week during the joint annual meetings of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and American Association for Dental Research (AADR) in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The two organizations jointly own the journal.
For the last 10 years, the editor-in-chief of JDR has been Dr. William Giannobile, chair of the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He is one of several U-M dental faculty members who join dentists and researchers from around the world in describing how the journal has led scientific inquiry into oral health sciences over the last 100 years. Giannobile notes the research on the pages of the journal in the early years seems simple now, but back then it was groundbreaking science that Gies had the foresight to begin publishing. From that “firm foundation in science and new information,” the Journal has grown to draw complex research from around the world thanks to a strong editorial board and peer review system, Giannobile said.
Other U-M faculty members featured in the video include Dean Laurie McCauley, Nisha D’Silva, Jacques Nör and Peter Polverini. Several graduate students and other researchers are shown working in labs around the School of Dentistry.
The IADR, with more than 11,400 individual members worldwide, along with the AADR and the Canadian Association for Dental Research, is dedicated to advancing research and increasing knowledge for the improvement of oral health worldwide; supporting and representing the oral health research community; and facilitating the communication and application of research findings.
