Dental school still ranked No. 1 in U.S. in latest QS survey3 min read

Ann Arbor, Mich., Feb. 27, 2019 -– The University of Michigan School of Dentistry is rated as the top dental school in the United States for the fifth consecutive year by an international publication that rates universities.

The 2019 QS World University Rankings also lists U-M as the fifth best dental school in the world.

QS analyzes information about 4,500 institutions in 75 countries and publishes overall university rankings, as well as rankings for 48 specialties, including dentistry, to help prospective students identify the world’s leading schools. For the specialty rankings, an international survey of 83,000 academics worldwide rate in these areas:

   • The academic reputation of universities.
   • The opinion of graduate employers in terms of which institution’s graduates they are most likely to employ.
   • Research citations by paper from Scopus over a five-year period.
   • A method called the “h-index” that measures the productivity and impact of the published work of a scientist or scholar, or a group, such as a department or a university.

“Research has always been a foundational part of our dental school – it’s incorporated into our mission statement,” said Dean Laurie McCauley. “Being a leader in dental education and clinical training means making scientific discoveries that advance not just dentistry but overall health. We’re gratified when surveys like the QS rankings place our researchers among the best in the world.”

Worldwide, the top four dental schools above U-M, starting with No. 1, are Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden; Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam, Netherlands; King’s College London, Great Britain; and the University of Hong Kong. The next highest U.S. dental schools after U-M at No. 5 were Harvard University at No. 7, the University of Washington at No. 10, the University of California-San Francisco and the University of North Carolina, tied at No. 14, and New York University at No. 16.

The rankings are a publication of the British Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Company.  More information and the list of the top dental schools in the world can be found on the QS website

The QS ranking is one of the two leading international university rankings published each year.  The other, the Shanghai Rankings, most recently released in July 2018, rated the U-M dental school No. 1 in the world in Dentistry and Oral Sciences.
